But it slows down my internet! ... and other myths we hear from kids

Kids can be very clever when trying to persuade mum and dad that parental controls are a bad idea. Here are the facts you need to know - and share.

Mums and dads all across the globe describe Family Zone’s strong parental controls as a life-saver.

Their kids? Well, not so much.

That’s only to be expected. Kids don’t pester you for more broccoli and an earlier bedtime. And it’s not likely they’ll be over the moon about having their screen-time managed.

They wouldn’t be kids if they didn’t push back just a little … and sometimes quite a lot.

We’ve been in this business long enough to know that children can be very clever when they try to persuade mum and dad that Family Zone is a really bad idea. (Also, we're parents. We get it!) Other times, they may be genuinely misinformed about how our system operates.

Here are a few of the most common complaints we hear from kids - along with the fact-checking it may be useful to share with them.

  • “It drains my battery.”

While Family Zone has been tailored to have as little impact on the user as possible, it is still an open app and uses an additional connection. Both of these will cause the battery to drain slightly faster than if they were not present. However, if this drain is regularly noticeable then we will investigate and find what's going wrong.

  • “It slows down my internet.”

Family Zone has been installed on the device to filter internet traffic. On occasion this requires an additional step in retrieving access permissions before loading a site (it is doing its job to ensure the site is safe for your kids!).

However, the delay should be minimal and almost not noticeable. If you’re experiencing a noticeable lag, please let our support team know and they will work to minimise this to a more reasonable level.

  • “It’s tracking me.”

Family Zone uses location features. If parents or guardians have turned this feature on, Family Zone will be able to report the last known position of the device. If the location feature has not been turned on, Family Zone does not track the position of the device.

  • “It’s an invasion of my privacy.”

Family Zone does not have the ability to look at information being transferred in messages, images or videos. All we do look at is the web address of the traffic. Our system then decides what category this traffic comes under and if this is allowed for the user of the device at the time.

  • “It’s stopping me from doing my homework.”

Family Zone is not designed to interfere with your child’s ability to learn or complete school assignments. If your child is being blocked from a site required for their curriculum you can simply add it - see how here.

  • “It’s spyware.”

Family Zone does not have the ability to look at information being transferred in messages, images or videos. All we do look at is the web address of the traffic. Our system then decides what category this traffic comes under and if this is allowed for the user of the device at the time.

  • “It’s not compatible with my phone.”

Older phones may need an upgrade but Family Zone can usually work on devices that are up to the latest 4 versions of the brand offering. Family Zone supports as low as IOS 9, the operating system of the iPhone 4s.

  • “It’s using too much storage on my laptop.”
    • Family Zone folders take up 260MB on a device
    • An entry level computer will have approz 500GB of storage
    • 260/500,000 is 0.052 of one percent of a 500GB computer storage

Note that a gigabyte (GB) is 1000 times bigger than a megabyte (MB)!
