Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can my child remove the Family Zone app from their device?
A: Yes – and they probably will try at first. However, as a parent, you’ll receive notifications if they do and can act appropriately.
Q: What will students be unable to access during the school day?
A: The rules that we have put in place are designed to keep students from accessing inappropriate content or other forms of content that might distract them from their learning. The main categories we are preventing access to are:
- Adult Content
- Offensive Content
- Social Media
- Gaming
- Entertainment Streaming Media
Q: What time will school rules apply from?
A: School rules have been set up to run from 9am until 3pm, Monday to Friday.
One of the biggest challenges students will face during online learning is an absence of structure to their day. By setting an expectation of how a device can be used between certain hours, it is our expectation that it will both help students enter the right mindset to study, and will help parents create some structure in the home environment.
Q: What will happen outside of this time?
A: No filtering rules or restrictions will be in place – your child will be free to browse the internet in the same way that they normally would.
For parents who want to understand how their children are using their device, you can optionally receive an ‘Insights’ report.
Q: Can the school see what my child is accessing?
A: No – CEDP have set a standard set of policies for what can be accessed, but will not be receiving reports on students usage of personal devices.
Q: What about other devices I have at home? I’m concerned that my child will just play on their phone or tablet instead.
A: You can install the Family Zone app on any other devices - including phones - that allow you to install the software. If you do this, the same rules will be applied to that device during school hours.
Ensuring the safety of students
online during remote learning
As we are all aware, the impact that COVID-19 is having on education in Australia continues to grow. And with schools across NSW now experiencing upward of 75% absenteeism, we have made the decision to move primarily to online education for the foreseeable future.
The transition to delivering learning remotely across the internet has raised questions from members of the community about how to keep students focused on their learning during ‘school time’, as well as concerns about the impact of increased screen time on student online behaviours and safety. With that in mind, we are happy to announce that we have partnered with Family Zone, Australia’s leading provider of cyber-safety and digital awareness services, to help support parents during online education.
Each family who would like support with these challenges will be able to create a free Family Zone account which will allow CEDP to put rules and restrictions in place around how each student can use the internet during defined school hours.
For parents concerned about screen time and device usage during online education, you can choose to receive a weekly report providing high-level insights into your child's activities online.
If you would like to take advantage of these tools, please follow the steps below.
