A school community approach to cyber safety.

Because they're worth it.

In the last 12 months, a disturbing trend has begun to emerge. Mobile technology has become ubiquitous in our school community. The students are focusing more and more on social media as a means of communication and entertainment during recess, lunch and even between classes. Whilst we acknowledge that there are many benefits to mobile technology which allows for easy communication, we are becoming increasingly concerned with the impact of social media (which is by and largefacilitated by mobile technology), on the social and emotional and learning outcomes of our students.

There is growing research which links the excessive use of social media with poor wellbeing outcomes, sleep hygiene issues and lower academic outcomes. As a result, we have reviewed and amended our current mobile phone and internet policy.

In summary, PLC Sydney will be partnering with Family Zone, an internet security and cyber safety service provider, who will supply PLC Sydney with the capacity to block social media apps on mobile devices and monitor our students’ footprint on internet sites while they are at school. Registering with Family Zone will also give parents the capacity to monitor their daughter’s mobile and internet use outside of school hours and in the home. Parents will be asked to register with Family Zone as a parent of PLC. Every student in Years 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 will be required to have the Family Zone monitoring app downloaded and registered with PLC Family Zone before they bring their mobile devices to school. This includes iPads used in the Junior School. Parents will incur no cost for registering with Family Zone and using its services.
