A school community approach to cyber safety.

Trinity Schools Cyber Safety Evening - 18 SEPTEMBER 6.30pm at St Matthews Hall

Digital technology has opened up a world of possibilities for our children. At the same time, it has multiplied potential risks.

Our goal is to protect every student from exposure to online threats - from inappropriate content to cyberbullying. That’s why we’ve partnered with Australia’s leading provider of cyber safety and digital-awareness services, Family Zone.

To complete the circle of safety for your child, however, we need your participation.

We need you to take the following steps as soon as you can:

1. Watch the videos below, and read the information under each one which explains things in more detail.

2. Activate your Family Zone account. You will be sent an activation email after the Cyber Safety Parent Evening.  If you do not receive an email, please contact info@stmatts.school.nz

3. Follow the steps in the section 'How to install Mobile Zone' to get it running on your child's device.

WHAT IS MOBILE ZONE?

Mobile Zone is a downloadable app/application that's installed on your child’s device.

It allows us to apply our acceptable use policies during school times and gives parents the option of parental controls after school.

 Family Zone accounts are required

Parents need a Family Zone account to manage children's profiles and (optionally) manage parental control settings outside of school hours.

Our school will work with Family Zone to automatically create an account for you.

You will then receive an email from Family Zone with a link to activate your account.

SCHOOL POLICIES

From Monday the 28th January 2019, the following policies will apply to all students attending any of the Trinity Schools:

Years 1 - 9

All Year 1-9 students must have the Mobile Zone app installed and activated on all digital devices they choose to bring to school (eg phones, laptops, tablets etc). The school will then be able to provide filtering and enforce its acceptable use policy on the device during school hours even if the student uses other networks to connect to the internet (eg mobile phone data), which will help keep students safe online. Follow the instructions in the section 'How To Install Mobile Zone'.

Years 10-13

It is strongly recommended for students in years 10-13 that they have the Mobile Zone app installed and activated on their devices that they bring to school. The school will then be able to provide filtering and enforce its acceptable use policy on the device during school hours even if the student uses mobile data, which will help keep students safe online. Students may then be allowed to use these devices to support their learning during class time, if their teacher consents. Follow the instructions in the section 'How To Install Mobile Zone'.

Boarding House

All Year 1-10 Boarding students must have Mobile Zone running on any digital devices they choose to bring. Parents, when setting up your boarding children's routines, please ensure that they fit with the Boarding House's routines (eg bedtime, study time etc). Please also ensure that your children have access to age-appropriate social media apps only (eg no Facebook and Instagram until 13 years old). Finally, please ensure that children have access to potentially distracting social media (eg Snapchat, Facebook) during 'Play' time only, not 'Study' or 'Sleep' time. The school will restate expectations on this in a separate communication to parents of children that board at the school.

Outside School Hours

Parents are able to use the Mobile Zone application outside of school hours to keep their kids safe when they use their devices on unsafe networks (eg mobile data, home wifi). This is all enabled by default in your Family Zone account. Parents can customise this via their Family Zone account, by logging in at www.familyzone.com. Parents can choose to use the age-appropriate default settings or customise to what has been discussed with their child.  Parents can also turn the filtering off outside of school time (referred to as ‘Sleep’, ‘Play’ and ‘Study’ time), in the children's profile settings.

COSTS

Years 1-10 -- Family Pack of 6 Licenses:

A special Family Zone Family Pack provides 6 Mobile Zone licenses to cover up to 6 devices.  The School will provide all families with students in years 1-10 with a FAMILY PACK for each student (max one pack per family). There is no cost for this. Families can then use the 6 Mobile Zone licenses in each pack to activate Mobile Zone on up to 6 of their children's devices. You may use any leftover licenses for siblings, if you wish, even if they are at other schools.  After your children leave the school, you will need to pay $59.00 a year if you want to continue using the Family Pack.

Years 11-13 -- Single Mobile Zone License:

The School will provide all families with students in years 11-13 with a single Mobile Zone license for each student. There is no cost for these single licenses.  Families can then use those licenses to activate Mobile Zone on their children's mobile phones, if their children are bringing these devices onto school grounds.

Upgrading to a Family Pack

If any family with students in years 11-13 with only a single Mobile Zone licence wants to upgrade from a single license to a Family Pack of 6 licenses, they can upgrade their account through the Family Zone portal once they have activated their account and signed in. This is available at a special education price of $59.00 for a 1-year subscription. If you need support when trying to upgrade, contact support@familyzone.com.
